The Sting-Ray boom extended into the 1970s. After a brief period of slow sales, the Sting-Ray became the “in” bike for its generation. The importation of English racers (multi-geared bikes) in the 1950s presented a severe challenge to American manufacturers such as Schwinn, who was the first American manufacturer to respond. Most Schwinn models targeted young riders. Schwinn began an aggressive policy to cultivate bicycle retailers, encouraging them to make Schwinn their predominant brand. Schwinn expanded its sales venues to include bicycle shops, hardware stores, and toy stores. Schwinn ended rebranding manufacturing in 1950, and all Schwinn bikes made after 1950 carry the Schwinn brand. Until 1950, Schwinn sold the bulk of its bikes through department stores, many of which were converted into store brands. The Paramount series of motorbikes was introduced. Schwinn began sponsoring bicycle racing, entering its team in the competitions. Eventually, the Aerocycle was marketed as the cruiser or paperboy bike. Working with the American Rubber Company, Schwinn developed balloon tires for the Aerocycle. The bike was remolded a year later and branded the Aerocycle.
